How to Paint Snow Easy 5 Tips
Tip 1 - Snow Splatter
Creating snow splatter is a fun and easy way to paint snow. This painting effect is a great way to create the look of falling snow. Start by painting your sky blue on a piece of paper or canvas board. Then get a wet paint brush and dip it in some white paint. You can tap off any excess water on the edge of your cup. When you spread the bristles over your paper you will create splatter marks. If you hold the brush further away you will have smaller dots of snow. This is also a great technique for painting stars. If the paint smudges you can always paint over it or wipe it off with a rag. Like all techniques -be sure to practice this one!
Tip 2- Add Silver or Metallic Paint to the Snow
To capture the sparkle of snow you can add a metallic or shiny paint to your white paint. I like using a paint by Golden called iridescent pearl. You can also try adding silver to your while paint by mixing it. You only need a small amount.
Tip 3- Add Different Colours to Snow
It’s important to remember that snow isn’t just white. A white blanket of snow may look completely white but it’s not! Be sure to add other colours to your white through colour mixing. You can add red, yellow, blue, brown, black, grey, purple to your snow in different areas to make it look more natural.
Tip 4- Create Texture with Snow
Use a palette knife to create texture in the snow. You can also experiment with using different brushes, sponges and paper towels too. Try using different brushstrokes like dabbing, scraping etc. Check out this video all about different brushstrokes and get experimenting!
Tip 5- Play with Light and Shadows
Everything has light and shadows including snow. Be sure to add some yellow highlights to the snow for where the sun is hitting the snow. Add some blue or black to snow to add shadows of trees, branches, foot prints etc. on the snow. By taking photos of snow and spending time walking outside on a snowy day you will start to notice all the highlights and shadows that snow has.
How to Paint Snow Easy Bonus tip - add areas of thicker paint and thin washes - allow parts of the blue sky to show through the paint.
