Step 1 -Paint the Sky

You can begin to paint the sky by using your cobalt blue paint and painting in a smooth horizontal direction across the canvas, covering the first two inches and painting the edges of the canvas. Then you can blend in the turquoise blue over top of the cobalt blue. You can apply two coats to make sure the sky is covered. You can paint in clouds if you would like. You can mix in some white with the blue towards the bottom. The sky should be painted for two thirds of the canvas, leaving one third for the wheat field.

Step 2- Paint the Field

Starting with a base coat of the green I have used chromeoxide green. You can paint the base coat with a one inch flat brush to cover the field completely. You can brush the details of the wheat with cadmium yellow paint. You can mix some black with the green and yellow with the green to create a variety of greens. You can check out my free mixing green resource here! Using a round number 6 brush you can paint some abstract trees by mixing green and black together creating little blobs on the horizon line. Keep the trees abstract and don’t focus on making them look perfect. You can also add a horizontal line a centimeter down from the horizon line to form a shadow and a separation of the grass and the wheat field. You want to add lots of lines and texture to your wheat field, so you can switch to a number 2 round brush. It helps to look at a picture of a wheat field and make sure the lines and marks are different sizes in different directions to create variety and interest. At the front of the canvas or the foreground you can brush in some grasses in different directions and use some curved lines to look like the grass/wheat are blowing in the wind. Fill in the rest of the wheat field with different browns, yellows and greens. You can add some little dots of yellow and mix yellow with white to have it look more like wheat. You can paint in some other shades and tints of greens in the background by the horizon line.

Step 3-Paint the Hydro Pole

To paint the hydro pole you can begin to map it out in chalk or start painting the vertical lines with a small detail brush. Once you have drawn it out to the left side of the canvas a few centimeters in from the edge, you can begin to paint in the pole with grey. Again you can download my free resource for mixing grey/green here! Once you are happy with the hydro pole you can paint the wires. Get your detail brush weta bit and add some mars black paint to paint the horizontal lines. Again it is good to reference a photo for this. Don’t worry about having the lines look too perfect or too straight.

Step 4-Paint the Details

Lastly, you can paint in the details like the wires on the side of the hydro pole and the wood grain of the pole. It helps to add a variety of greys to make this look realistic. You can add some brown to your grey as well. Make sure to add a shadow towards one side of the pole painting in a curved direction to help the pole look round and not flat. On the opposite side of the pole you can add some highlights too.
