How to Paint a Valentines Day Painting
Step 1:
Begin by painting the background of your surface. I used grey. You can any colour you would like to but you want to choose a contrasting colour of your heart. To learn more about mixing grey - you can check out my mixing grey video on YouTube. I used a flat one inch brush and in a vertical direction I brushed on mars black and titanium white mixing it together and using a dry brush to create texture in my background. I made certain areas of the background lighter by adding more titanium white.
Step 2:
Next, I began to paint the heart on my Valentines day painting. Make sure the background is dry first! You can draw your heart in chalk or trace around a heart you cut out from a piece of paper. I chose to free-hand my heart. You can begin by choosing similar colours (I chose warm colours of pinks, oranges, reds and yellows). Start by drawing around your heart in one colour and as you work inward each ring can be a new colour. You can repeat colours if you want and create a pattern. You can add some strokes outside the edge of your heart letting some of the background shine through to appear as the heart is glowing. You can paint a couple of layers of paint if needed.
Step 3:
Once the heart has dried, you can begin to add some thin lines with a Posca pen. I chose a thin white pen. You can begin to add doodles, outlines or words. You can look at mine for inspiration.
