Art of Diwali

Diwali is a beautiful holiday that can be celebrated in your classroom as a way to educate your students about different cultures and how people celebrate holidays around the world. Art of Diwali is so beautiful and it makes up a big part of this Holiday. During December before the holiday break, I like to spend time introducing students about different holidays and how people celebrate them around the world. Learn more about the art of Diwali below!

What is Diwali?

The five-day festival celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Hindus across the world are celebrating Diwali. The dates for Diwali changes yearly. The date for 2023 is Sunday, November 12, 2023. Diwali, also spelled Divali, is a beautiful holiday. Ideas to Celebrate Diwali in the Classroom

When learning and celebrating other holidays and cultures. I like to ask my students what they celebrate and if they would like to share their holiday or celebrations with the class. This is a great chance for students to share knowledge and develop their leadership skills. I send an email out to parents encouraging them to bring in items from their culture if they wish like food, clothing or help their child make a slideshow with pictures.

Art of Diwali

People create patterns called rangoli on the floor using coloured powders or sand. We had one of students demonstrate this in the class and the students loved it.

Rangoli and Mandalas are similar but this article does well in explaining the differences:https://www.askdifference.com/rangoli-vs-mandala/

You can have students learn about both the rangoli and the mandala and draw one or create a rangoli on the floor.

I have created Mandala Symmetry Worksheets that have Rangoli designs too for students in Primary, middle school and high school.
