Should I Pursue an Art Related Career?

Are you a creative person? An art related career might be right for you! A visual art career is fun and you are able to put your creative and art skills to the test. Everyday is a different day and creative art related careers are by no means boring. Learn about an art related career below! 

Art Related Career 


There are other options for art related careers but I am choosing to highlight some of the most popular art related careers. Scroll down to see if any of these visual art careers are interesting to you! 

Artist/Designer


There are many different types of artists and designers you can be. As an artist or designer you can really specialize in a specific set of skills and hone your abilities and talents. You can be a painter, ceramicist, tattoo artist, textile designer, fashion designer, seamstress, set designer, jewelry designer, interior designer, print maker, or sculptor. The list goes on and on. Even if you are a specific type of artist you can then specialize in the techniques or materials you use. This helps you become known for something while building your skills and strengths at the same time. 



Going to art school is a great option to really hone your skills. While in school you will be able to practice and experiment to develop a sense of style and figure out what materials and techniques you enjoy looking at.


Art school allows you to be able to communicate what your art and designs mean which is helpful when you are applying for funding for your art or to have your art displayed in exhibitions. 



As an artist or designer you can work for yourself selling your art at markets, online on your website on a shared online marketplace like Etsy or you can work for a business or company.

Art Teacher/Professor


If you like helping others or teaching skills, being an art teacher or art professor could be a great art related career for you. This career gives you a salary and standard working hours, with summers off where you can work on your own artwork.


You can teach elementary art, high school art, college, or university art. Usually you will need a teaching degree and if you want to teach at the college or university level you will need a masters degree as well as teaching experience. 

Going to art school allows you to refine your skills to make your teaching stronger. You can also gain ideas for projects and assessments that you can teach future students. 


If you like teaching but don’t want to teach at a school you can teach online, create a digital course, teach on YouTube, teach for an online company, tutor, create, and sell digital art teaching resources, teach art workshops at a local library, art studio or gallery. You can even be an arts educator at a gallery and give tours to school groups while providing educational arts based lessons and activities. 

Graphic Designer

If you love design colours, fonts and branding -graphic design could be a great career for you. There are lots of different types of graphic design ranging from logo design, product packaging design, marketing, advertisements, poster design etc. 


As a graphic designer you can choose to work for yourself and create your own business or to be a graphic designer for a company or business.


While at school studying graphic design you will learn about the history of graphic design and modern day graphic design, refine your skills, and style as a graphic designer and more! 



Architect

If you love drawing and math, or engineering, being an architect could be your dream job! In this role you can design buildings, monuments, etc. You can create buildings that are both beautiful or visually interesting while being functional and practical. Being an architect means you are meticulous and have a lot of attention to detail. 



You can work for an architectural firm or work closely with other contractors and construction companies. 


In school, you will learn about the history of architecture, famous architects and buildings and present-day architecture to be able to inspire your unique designs.

Curator

A curator often works at an art gallery or museum. They are in charge of planning and organizing art exhibitions or other museum exhibitions. There is a lot of planning, research and writing and preparing involved in this role. A curator is someone who is organized, a strong communicator and writer.


A curator can also work independently working on behalf of artists and applying and organizing exhibitions at a variety of different galleries or venues. Curators can apply for grants and funding similarly to an artist to help organize exhibitions and ensure everyone is paid appropriately. 



While in school, you will be studying art history to understand past art movements, art exhibitions and famous artists. You will also be studying contemporary art to get a handle on art created today. This will inspire you to plan interesting exhibitions that communicate a strong and clear message to the audience and get viewers to really think about and reflect on the artwork. 


Animator/Video Game Design 

As an animator or a video game designer you have lots of technological skills. You love digital design and probably enjoy movies and/or video games. These visual art careers are many people’s dream jobs and it could be your dream job too! 



In these art related careers, you will refine your digital and design skills and find out what part and type of animation or video game design you are interested in. You will get to experiment and learn new techniques to keep up with contemporary video game design and the latest animation techniques and trends. You will be able to work for companies or maybe even design your own video game or take part in the animation of a big movie name like Disney or Pixar! 



Illustrator

There are many different types of illustration in terms of the materials or techniques used and where the illustrations are being used. What comes to mind when you hear illustrator is probably a children’s book illustrator as there are many illustrations in children’s books. There are many different types of illustrators like digital illustrators, watercolour illustrators, children’s book illustrators, character designers, storyboard artists, technical illustrators, fashion illustrators, scientific illustrators, comic book artists, and editorial illustrators. Which kind of illustrator will you be?


While in school studying illustration, you will explore different types of illustrations and the methods used to create them. You will learn and refine your illustration skills including using drawing, composition, colour theory, and digital creation methods that are becoming increasingly popular!
