The Best Calming Colors for a Classroom

Back to school is approaching and I want to share the best calming colors for a classroom and for classroom decor. Continue reading to learn the best calming colors for a classroom. According to the dictionary, calm is defined as, “not showing or feeling nervousness, anger, or other strong emotions.” It is also described as, “ the absence of violent or confrontational activity within a place or group.” Or, “make (someone) tranquil and quiet; soothe.”

Best Calming Colors for a Classroom

As a teacher, calmness is what we aim to have in the classroom. If you have ever experienced an active, loud or high energy classroom, you know that you don’t want to experience that AGAIN!

Often behavioural issues with students can be triggered by their environment (your classroom). As teachers, we can control how the classroom looks and how it is organized. You can read more about creating a calm classroom here!

If you think about creating calm then the way you set up your classroom makes sense. If you have a classroom with lots of posters, bright colours, lots of text then children will be overstimulated. They should have areas of the room where their eyes can rest and where they can feel calm.

If our classroom looks and feels calm it is safe to say that it will most likely help the students to feel calm too. When your class is calm you can feel happier and more calm too!

The Best Calming Colors for a Classroom - Blue

Blue for me is such a peaceful color. It symbolizes calm, relaxation, water, the beach, freshness and the spa. I try to use blue a lot in my classroom and in the decor that is in my class. One of my classroom bulletin boards is even painted blue. These throw pillows are great for adding a pop of blue and also give your students some flexible seating options that can make them feel calm.

The Best Calming Colors for a Classroom - Green

Green is a great natural color. I try to add a lot of plants in my classroom and other bits of greenery. Plants need to be nurtured and the act of gardening or taking care of plants can also be very calming.

The Best Calming Colors for a Classroom - Browns and Neutrals

Neutral colors like browns and greys are nice calming colors because they are Earth tones and very natural colours. You can add a lot of natural items in your classroom like wood and wicker baskets to make the room feel more grounded and a sense of calm.
