How to Paint Sunset Paintings
You can start by planning out your painting. I like to work from photographs to use as inspiration for my paintings. You can choose the colours you want to use in your painting. The nice thing about a sunset painting is that it can have such a variety of colours in it.
You can decide if you want your sunset painting to have water or land in it.
You can also map out where you want the sun. The sun will be near the horizon line and it will also be the brightest and most vibrant part of the painting. By having pictures of sunsets you will be able to see how the colours layer and flow in a sunset. You can also choose whether or not you want to add clouds in your painting.
Darker colours of the sunset are generally going to be further away from the sun at the top of the canvas. Darker colours could also appear in shadows of clouds.
A successful sunset is built up with layers of colours and textures. A sunset has a variety of colours make sure you have at least 10 different colours.
Once you have painted the sunset sky and painted multiple layers you can begin to paint other details using a detail brush that might be in your picture like trees, buildings etc.
A final tip is to make sure to continue to practice painting sunsets and taking photographs of sunsets so that you have more inspiration the next time you paint!
