How to Paint the Moon Easy -The Steps
Step One -Paint the Sky
How to paint the moon easy starts by mixing cobalt blue and mars black together to make a navy blue. Cover the canvas with your one inch flat blue painting horizontal from side to side. In some areas of the sky you can add a bit more cobalt blue. It’s good to add variety and movement in the background so it is not just one flat colour.
Step Two- Paint the Clouds
Mix some mars black and titanium white together to get a light grey and begin painting the clouds. Start from the bottom of the canvas and begin painting a wavy line. We are planning on putting the moon in the centre of the canvas, so make sure you leave space for it. The cloud lines that are closest to the moon are going to be brighter and more white from the light of the moon. Begin filling in the clouds but let parts of the sky show through. You can use a sponge or dry brush to create a soft texture. You can also add different colours of greys by adding reds and yellows to have a variety of greys in your clouds. Continue painting the rest of the clouds and framing the clouds around where the full moon will go. Make sure your clouds have highlights and shadows.
Step Three- Paint the Moon Easy
After you have mapped out where to put the clouds you can begin to draw out where to put the moon. You can use chalk or a bit of white paint on the small detail round brush. Begin by drawing a circle for the moon. You could trace around something round like a roll of masking tape. You can look off a picture of a moon or paint a more abstract moon. Leave some circles of the moon dark and let the sky show through. You can paint the rest of the moon white. Then mix some grey by mixing titanium white and mars black to add some shadows around the dark spots or craters of your moon. You can paint in a curved direction so that the moon appears round. You can add some shadows near the bottom of the moon. When the paint is dry you can add another layer to make the white pop.
Step Four- Paint the Stars
Put some white paint with a bit of water on the end of your detail brush and begin pulling back the bristles to create a splatter effect. You can experiment first on a piece of paper. You can try pulling the bristles closer to your canvas and further away to get different sizes of splatters. If you would like to use silver or a metallic paint you can try that as well.
