What is Symmetry Drawing?
Symmetry is everywhere and is a part of nature. Trees, flowers, insects and so much more are symmetrical. Symmetry means that if you divide something in half then both sides will be equal or symmetrical.

The Benefits of Symmetry Drawing
Benefit 1- Students can learn about symmetry and combine art and math
I had to teach math one year and hated it! I combined my love for art and created my symmetry drawing worksheets. By incorporating my passion for art -math was more fun for me to teach! Symmetry combines both math and art. You need to be able to represent the other half of the drawing by making it symmetrical and drawing it as realistic as possible. With my symmetry worksheets, I have a version that uses grid-lines and students can count the number of squares to know exactly how to draw the other half to make it symmetrical. With the different themes that I have like trees - kids can learn about botany while drawing the other half of a symmetry drawing worksheet. Symmetry art is great for cross-curricular lesson planning. These worksheets are a great way to make math more interactive or to make art more appealing to student who really loves math!
Benefit 2- Students can improve their realistic drawing
Symmetry art is a great way to challenge students by making it a competition to see who can make the most realistic drawing. You could also do a monthly symmetry drawing challenge where each month students can have a competition with themselves to see how their drawing improves over time. Through repetition of using these symmetry worksheets students will be able to gain skills like patience, persistence, attention to detail, taking their time, effort to help them become more realistic at drawing.
Benefit 3-worksheets are fun and rewarding even if kids don’t like drawing
I have watched students who don’t really like art become engaged and obsessed. They are proud of what they accomplished and proud of the drawings their friends did too. I have many themes for the worksheets so that each student can have a variety to choose from and can find a topic to draw that is engaging to them. Student choice is important!
All you need is a printed or photocopied page of my symmetry drawing worksheets, a pencil and eraser. It’s that easy!
When to Use Symmetry Drawing
Kids love grabbing a worksheet when they finish their work early.

I have also made an 88 page insect symmetry line drawing package that includes 44 different insects that are on gridlines and some without gridlines. The gridlines make it easier for students to draw because they can count the squares as they draw to make sure their side matches up. These gridline sheets incorporate math and measuring nicely! The pages without the gridlines are a bit more challenging.
