Mandalas in Nature - Outdoor Learning
Mandalas in nature are a great way to teach about the environment in outdoor learning. When kids select items to make their mandalas they can do some research to discover what different leaves, flowers and wildflowers are called. When students understand botany and their natural environment they can begin to respect it and take care of it.
With all of the environmental problems we are facing it is important to teach kids and younger children how to be protectors and leaders for environmental change. If kids appreciate nature from an early age that will do wonderful things!
When to Make Mandalas in Nature
You can make nature mandalas in any season. Fall is great because there are so many natural items on the ground! Winter can be fun because you can use your footprints in the snow or make tiny snow balls or snow sculptures. You could even add food colouring in the snow! Spring and summer you can use leaves, flowers or individual flower petals.
Other Benefits of making Mandalas in Nature:
Students can not only learn to appreciate and respect nature but they can learn about math, measuring, design and symmetry during the creation process of making mandalas in nature.
Students can also learn about the culture and religious traditions of the mandala through their own research.
Mandalas have a very calming presence not only in their design but in the process of making them. Making a mandala in nature can teach kids how to be calm, be careful, be patient and be considerate.
