Mermaid Painting Tutorials -the Steps
Step 1 -the background
Begin the mermaid painting tutorial by painting your background ultramarine blue. You can use your flat one inch brush to paint the ultramarine blue as you get to the bottom you can begin mixing titanium white and blending the blue and light blue together for the background.
Step 2- draw the mermaid tail
With a piece of chalk you can begin to draw out the shape of the mermaid tail. You can work from a picture if you would like.
Step 3- paint in the mermaid tail
You can paint in your mermaid tail by mixing yellow, blue and white. When you are painting the tail it is good to have some variety of different greens so that you are not just painting the tail one solid shade of green. Apply a couple coats of paint to make sure it is covered completely. Check out my FREE mixing green resource here!
Step 4-let the tail dry and paint the bubbles
We want to let the tail dry so that we can paint on the textured layer of the mermaid tail. To paint the bubbles you can paint a bottle cap with titanium white and stick the lid to the paper when you peel off the lid it will create a print. Then you can add a bit of water on your brush and fill in the circle so that it looks like a transparent bubble.
Step 5 -paint the details of the mermaid tail
You can mix other shades of greens and blue and paint in the wavy lines of the top of the tail where the fin is.You can even mix in some purples and reds. Using bubble wrap or plastic netting that wraps around oranges you can use that material to print with. Lay down the netting or bubble wrap and then apply paint. Press it down and peel it off carefully to leave a cool textured print. Once you are happy with the texture you can let the mermaid tail painting dry. Using a fine detail brush and some metallic paint you can begin to paint curved lines as fish scales. This will help make the mermaid look more beautiful and magical!
