Supplies Needed for Mountain Range Sunset Painting:

-Canvas or canvas board

-Cup of water

-Palette

-Cloth rag

-Acrylic Paint - cadmium red, mars black, titanium white, cadmium yellow, cobalt blue

-flat one inch brush

-round detail brush

-round #6 brush

Step 1 - Paint the Mountain Range

Begin by deciding the colour value scale for your mountains -choose a colour and make it darker by adding black -that mountain range will be in the foreground and then you can make the mountain colours lighter towards the background by adding white to the base colour. You can add 3 different sets of mountain ranges a dark, middle colour and light colour in the background. You can use wavy and/or straight lines to make your mountain ranges. If you want you can work off a photo of a mountain range to help you complete this panting. You can add a couple coats to your mountains. For my mountains I mixed some cobalt blue, cadmium yellow and a bit of black and then added some white for each set of mountains.

Step 2 - Paint the Sky

You can paint the sky any colour you want. You can decide what side you would like the sun to pop out from the mountain and paint that area with your cadmium yellow. For my sky, I mixed cadmium red with titanium white and a bit of cadmium yellow. You can give your sky a couple of coats. If you want to paint clouds - you can!

Step 3- Paint the details

You can paint the highlights in your foreground mountains by adding a bit of white to the mountain colour that is the closest to the front. You can add some extra cadmium yellow with a detail brush in curved lines around the circle of the sun to make it look like it is glowing.
