Painting of Canoe on Water -Steps:

Step 1- Begin Planning the Painting

Start by planning the painting. You can do this in coloured chalk or lightly in pencil. Begin by drawing the shape of the canoe in the centre of the canvas towards the bottom. Then you can draw the horizon line of trees as a rough outline about one third from the top of the canvas.

Step 2 - Paint the Sky

By mixing cobalt blue and titanium white you can paint a couple of coats of the sky colour at the top of your canvas above the horizon line of trees you drew. You could add clouds if you wanted to.

Step 3- Paint the Reflections in the Water

With some of the sky colour you mixed, you want to bring some of that colour into where the water is. You can use your number 6 round brush to paint this.

Then you can paint the horizon line of trees. You can experiment with mixing different greens and other fall colours like oranges, reds, yellows and browns. Mix some darker greens and browns to act as the shadows of the trees towards the bottom of the horizon line. You can paint the trees in a round detail brush and with your number 6 round brush. For the trees you can paint in different directions and dab your brush to get different textures in the trees.

You can add a couple coats of paint for the trees. The colours that you use to mix the trees can then be added into the water. Let parts of the sky colour show through in the water and use short horizontal strokes. You can add the reflections with your number 6 round brush.

You can fill the water with some cobalt blue and try to mix in some brown and white with your cobalt blue to make it look more like water. You can blend the reflections in by adding a little bit of water on your brush. You will want to do a couple of layers of paint.

Step 4 - Paint the Canoe

Begin by painting the shadows of the canoe in mars black. You will want to work from a picture of a canoe or reference my painting tutorial here.

When you are painting your canoe you can bring in some of those colours as water reflections. You can blend in the reflections into the water by adding some of the water colour that you mixed previously.

Once you have painted the dark parts on the canoe you can begin to paint the details of the canoe with your detail brush. You will want to paint a couple of layers of paint.

You can touch up any parts on the painting with your detail brush and the colours you have mixed on your palette.
