Teaching Colour Mixing Tips

Teaching colour mixing can be a challenging task for students but a really important and foundational skill. It’s important to teach colour mixing to inspire your students to play and experiment with the joy of creating new colours. To learn more about teaching colour mixing and my tips for teaching colour mixing keep reading.

There is something so magical about mixing colours of paint together and seeing all the colour combinations you can create. This is why I created some painting resources for teaching colour mixing.

There are lots of ways to teach colour mixing. You are also not limited to the supplies you use to teach colour mixing.

Here are some art supplies for teaching colour mixing:

  • Food colouring

  • Tempera paint

  • Water colour paint

  • Acrylic paint

  • Watercolour crayons or pencil crayons

  • Squares of tissue paper and water

  • Washable markers and water

It’s important to highlight the terminology for colour mixing like primary colours, secondary colours, analogous colours etc. especially in the high school setting. My colour mixing worksheets highlight these terms as well as teaching them through making a colour wheel.
