Zentangle Neon Heart Valentines Paintings Ideas

Neon heart Valentines painting is a wonderful idea for students and kids to try. Use Posca paint pens to complete the painting, but if you don't have Posca paint pens, a black Sharpie will work just fine.

Steps to Paint Zentangle Heart Valentine's Day Painting

Step 1: Choose the colour for your background. It helps to have students decide what colours are going to be in the different sections of their heart so you can choose a neutral colour for the background like a light blue or a light gray, but it helps to have the brainstorm the ideas that are going to be in a different section of their heart first, so that they can choose a good colour that complements their heart design.

Have the students start by doing a background colour and complete their background colour painting. It's good to do about two coats of paint. Make sure the background is completely covered. Students can paint on thick card stock paper, watercolour paper, a canvas board or whatever supplies you have.

Step 2: After students have painted their background, step number two is to draw their heart. I like to draw a heart with coloured chalk. You can use a template heart to cut out so that they can trace a nice heart shape.

Step 3: After the heart is drawn, students can use a ruler and a piece of colour chart to divide their heart into different sections. They can choose to divide the heart into five or six different sections.

Step 4: Students can begin to paint in the different sections of their hearts. They should choose a different colour for each section of the heart. They can choose bright neon colours, like my examples or any colours that they wish they should keep in mind that they will be adding black design with a Posca pen or a Sharpie so you want to avoid dark colours where the pattern will not show up on top. Alternatively, if the student wanted to use dark colours, they could use a white Posca pen on top, which would also look very nice. It’s good for students to paint two coats of paint on their sections so the colours appear flat.

Step 5: Using a Posca pen or a black sharpie students can tackle doodles on top they can add a different design on each section of the heart. If students want to practice, they can do a rough sketch on a piece of paper or in their sketchbooks. Some design ideas could include our stripes, polkadots, stars, hearts, or any patterns of different shapes, lines, or marks that they all like.

Textured Heart Doodle Painting

You can watch this tutorial below if you prefer to watch it!

Step 1: For this painting you will start by painting your background colour. I chose a nice neutral gray you can choose whatever colour you would like.

Similar to the last painting, students can paint on a thin card stock,  a watercolour paper, canvas board, or canvas. This design would be great to make a Valentine's Day card so painting on card stock or watercolour paper would look awesome.

Step 2: Students can trace a heart design using a cut out heart template. I'd like to try to find designs in colour chalk, so that the chalk can rub off.

Students can learn to paint in the heart design using a variety of warm colours like orange, red and pink. They can add different colours on the paint brush to create different textures. They can also paint different rings around her heart, for example, painting a small heart on the inside red, and then an outer ring of red orange, outer ring of a magenta colour, and then an outer ring of light pink they can choose to paint and whatever colours and orders.

With white Posca pen students can then write the word love in cursive and also add some extra zentangle doodles around the outside of their heart. This step is a course optional, and if you don't have a white Posca pen, don't worry about completing this step of the tutorial.
