Step 1 - Paint the Mountains
Start by creating a value scale for your mountain colours. Choose a base colour and darken it with black for the foreground mountains. Gradually lighten the colours by adding white to create midground and background mountain ranges. Aim for three layers: dark, medium, and light. Use wavy or straight lines to form your mountain silhouettes.
For reference, you can use a photo of a mountain range to guide your shapes. Add two or more coats of paint for a bold finish. For this tutorial, I mixed cobalt blue, cadmium yellow, and black for the base color, adding white for the lighter mountains.
Step 2 - Paint the Sky
Decide where you want the sun to peek out from behind the mountains. Paint that area with cadmium yellow. For the sky, I mixed cadmium red, titanium white, and a touch of cadmium yellow for a glowing sunset effect. Apply two coats if needed. Add clouds if you like for extra texture and depth!
Step 3 - Add Details
Enhance the foreground mountains by mixing a bit of white into the mountain colour to highlight their edges. Use a detail brush to add curved lines of cadmium yellow around the sun to create a glowing effect.
