Cactus Painting Tutorial

Supplies Needed for Cactus Painting Tutorial:
-Canvas or canvas board
-Cup of water
-Palette
-Cloth rag
-Acrylic Paint - cadmium red, mars black, titanium white, cadmium yellow, cobalt blue
-flat one inch brush
-round detail brush
-round #6 brush

Cactus Painting Tutorial Steps
Step 1- Paint the background
Begin by painting the background, you can use any colour but I have mixed cobalt blue with titanium white going from straight cobalt blue at the top of the canvas and a light cobalt blue and titanium white combo near the bottom. You can blend the colours together and paint two coats. Wait until the paint is completely dry before painting the next step!
Step 2 -draw the cactus shapes
You can draw the cactus shapes in chalk, pencil or paint them. You can decide if you want one cactus, 2 or 3. You can draw one that is shorter, taller, fatter, one that is straight, one that is wavy or one that has arms. You can also draw flowers on the top of your cacti if you would like. The choice is up to you! It helps to reference a photo when drawing something on a painting.
Step 3- Begin Painting the Cacti
Watch my mixing greens video to help you with this step! https://youtu.be/e1LCWAAwHbk Start by mixing variety of greens and filling in the cacti. You want to paint a couple layers. Adding a variety of greens in your painting will help it to look more realistic.
Step 4 - Paint the flowers
You can paint the flowers with some oranges, pinks or yellows. In your flower try to add some highlights by mixing white with your flower colour near the top of the flower. You can also add some flower shadows by mixing black with your flower colour and painting that near the base of your flowers. You can use your round number six brush to paint these.
Step 5- Paint the details of the needles
To paint the needles in this cactus painting tutorial I used a round detail brush that is thin and small. You can add black or white needles. Paint very thin and straight lines that are short sticking out in all angles and directions from the cactus. You can reference a photo of a cactus to help you with this step!
