-Cloth rag
-Acrylic Paint - cadmium red, mars black, titanium white, cadmium yellow, cobalt blue, turqoise, naples yellow
-flat one inch brush
-round detail brush
-round #6 brush
How to Paint a Sunset Field Painting:
Step 1 - Paint the sky
Start by painting the top two-three inches of the canvas in Cobalt blue. You will want to paint two layers. Make sure to paint the edges of your canvas as well! This should cover one third of the canvas. Next paint some turquoise blue mixed with titanium white to cover the second third of the canvas. You can paint to coats of this colour. You can also blend the top section of the cobalt blue with the new colour you added. In the final third of the canvas at the bottom, you can mix in some cadmium yellow and cadmium red. This will be where the sun is setting in the sky. You can paint two coats of this section. Make sure all the colours are blended nicely.
Step 2 - paint the silhouettes of the sunset field painting
With your one inch flat brush you can paint in the black silhouette at the bottom of your canvas. Use mars black to paint a horizontal line that is one inch thick at the bottom of the canvas.
Step 3 - paint the details of the sunset field painting
To paint the details of the sunset field painting you will use a round detail brush. You can begin to paint trees. Keep the trees looking abstract and avoid painting perfect pine trees. Squiggles in the distance will work fine. These trees and silhouettes are in the distance so keep them small and not too detailed or realistic. You can also paint houses, buildings or a barn and silo like in my example. In my example I painted some hydro poles and hydro wires. You can add those or choose to leave them out as that is a more challenging step.
To paint the hydro poles and wire you want to make sure you are using a thin detail brush and that your brush is coming to a nice point. You can wet your brush a little, if needed. Then you can begin to add tiny straight lines for the poles and thin straight lines going in the opposite direction (horizontally) for the wires. It helps to work off a photo of hydro wires as this can be challenging!
